Auburn University Libraries’ Special Collections and Archives Department has created two new exhibits sure to delight everyone. The first brings to life aspects of the 2024 Common Book, “The Music of Bees,” while the other pays homage to an Alabama original, Eugene Walter.

This year’s Auburn University Common Book, “The Music of Bees” by Eileen Garvin, interweaves the practice of beekeeping with the importance of friendship and community. Inspired by the book, the library’s new first floor exhibit features vintage Alabama Cooperative Extension Service (ACES) photographs and rare book illustrations from Special Collections and Archives. Modern beekeeping equipment is also on display courtesy of Auburn Library’s Piper Cumbo. This exhibit area is open during all RBD Library hours.

A man of many talents, Eugene Walter was a celebrated Alabamian who lived a remarkably full and eccentric life. From painting and acting to writing, editing and cooking, Walter captivated people with his stories and artistic talents. Stop by the Special Collections and Archives Department on the ground floor of Ralph Brown Draughon Library for a glimpse into Walter’s colorful world of cats, monkeys, celebrities and creativity in the exhibit Eugene Walter: Mobile’s Last Renaissance Man. This exhibit is open during all regular Special Collections and Archives hours.
