Apply to be the next Ralph “Shug” Jordan Professor of Writing

University Writing invites nominations and applications for an endowed professorship provided by Auburn Athletics in the name of Ralph “Shug” Jordan. The purpose of this award is to honor teaching excellence by an Auburn faculty member who has demonstrated a commitment to student success through effective and innovative writing assignments and writing instruction integrated into the course content. The professorship recognizes a tenured faculty member of any rank who has contributed to and focused on improving student writing in their discipline. The professorship is a three-year appointment and includes an annual salary supplement, which has historically been approximately $12,000 each year. 

The faculty member selected for this award is expected to continue his/her contribution to University Writing by providing leadership at the University level. The recipient of the award will:

- Serve as the co-chair of the University Writing Committee (UWC) 

- Work with the Director of University Writing to identify speakers and participate in the annual Shug Jordan Lecture and Workshop on Writing Across the Curriculum. 

- Attend the International Writing Across the Curriculum conference (or other appropriate conferences) and prepare a report for the UWC highlighting sessions attended and share major ideas with the faculty at appropriate events (expenses to be paid by University Writing) 

- Participate in University Writing events and projects (including contests, workshops, programs, etc.) 

- Serve as a resource to faculty across AU’s 12 colleges as requested or appropriate 

- Serve on the selection committee for subsequent Professorship 

- Work closely with the Director of University Writing to contribute to Auburn University’s reputation for excellence in writing across the curriculum
