Dear Student,
If your Auburn professor accuses you of cheating, remain calm and follow the proper procedures to resolve the issue. Here are some suggestions for navigating an academic dishonesty accusation.
Understand the Accusation
1. Clarify the accusation: Make sure you understand what you are accused of doing, including the specific assignment or exam.
2. Review the evidence: Request to see any evidence supporting the accusation, such as suspicious patterns or identical work.
The Academic Honesty Code
1. Familiarize yourself with Auburn's Academic Honesty Code to understand the definitions, procedures and potential sanctions.
2. Know your rights: You have the right to due process, including the opportunity to respond to the accusation, request a facilitated meeting, request a hearing and appeal decisions.
3. Understand the appeal process: After you receive official notification of Auburn’s decision in your case, you have five working days to submit a written appeal.
Responding to the Accusation
1. Remain professional: Approach meetings and emails calmly and respectfully, avoiding confrontational behavior.
2. Prepare your defense: Gather relevant materials — such as emails, the syllabus, notes or drafts — to support your case.
3. Meet with your professor to see if you can resolve the matter informally. Bear in mind that any agreement is subject to approval by the Office of the Provost. The instructor does not have to agree to participate in such a meeting, but if they do, this will be another opportunity to resolve the matter. If you are unable to come to an agreement in this meeting, or if the instructor declines to participate, you have the right to request a hearing.
If you have questions or concerns, contact the Ombuds Office, the chair of the Academic Honesty Committee or the facilitator assigned to your case.
