Technology doesn’t lead change - people do.
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to redefine the workplace, Facilities Management leaders and supervisors are finding practical, responsible ways to put new tools to work in their daily supervisory roles. To support that effort, HR Development (HRD) partnered with Facilities Management to deliver a customized, five-part TailorED learning series focused on AI tools and real supervisory applications.
“When we shared our idea for AI training tailored to Facilities Management supervisors, HRD immediately showed enthusiasm and treated the project with a real sense of priority,” said Sara Newman, HR Generalist, Facilities Management. “Their partnership helped us create training that was not only relevant, but fully customized to the needs of our workforce.”
A Five-Part Series Designed for Supervisors
The series focused on real-world supervisory applications of AI, helping supervisors build confidence and clarity around emerging tools. Sessions explored topics such as understanding AI fundamentals and responsible use at Auburn, leveraging AI to support position description development and performance documentation, guiding effective coaching conversations, developing behavioral interview questions and rubrics, and using M365 Copilot for everyday administrative tasks.
Each session emphasized responsible use, hands-on application, and reflection, allowing supervisors to connect concepts directly to their roles.
“The hands-on exercises were the most helpful,” said Michael Hood, Manager, Service Support, Facilities Management. “AI is not as intimidating as I thought it would be.”
Supervisors also left each session with a reusable prompt library designed to support their daily work.
Collaboration That Made the Difference
What made the series especially impactful was the cross-functional collaboration behind it. Facilities Management, Facilities IT, and HRD worked together to ensure content accuracy, technical support, and alignment with Auburn University values and guidance on the responsible use of generative AI.
“The AI program that TailorED provided has been an incredible asset to our team,” said Jessica Johnson, HR Generalist, Facilities Management. “Many of our trade-based supervisors find administrative tasks challenging, and this series gave them resources that make those responsibilities easier and far less intimidating.”
Positive Impact and Looking Ahead
Participants reported greater confidence discussing AI, increased awareness of responsible use, and a clearer understanding of how AI can support - rather than replace - effective supervision.
“I appreciated the practical examples and tips that can be applied immediately,” said Jason Yeomans, Mechanical Insulator.
As AI tools continue to evolve, the TailorED series helped supervisors focus on what matters most: using those tools responsibly and putting them to work in practical, day-to-day ways. Ultimately, the tools may change, but innovation comes from those who choose to learn, try, and lead through change.
