It was a great day for learning as talented young minds from across Alabama participated in the Elementary Science Olympiad Competition hosted by the College of Sciences and Mathematics' Outreach office at Auburn University on March 1.
More than 300 students from 16 schools came together for this premier STEM competition, showcasing their creativity, critical thinking and teamwork skills in a wide range of hands-on and written events.
The sports-like competition saw students from third to sixth grade participating in 20 events covering subjects such as astronomy, engineering, geography and earth science. Events are typically team-based and include both practical challenges in addition to written tests such as Dee Blue Sea.
Stephanie Kidd, a math coach from McCalla Elementary School, shared her enthusiasm for the event.
"This is an amazing experience where students get to collaborate with one another and discover more about who they are as learners," she said.
Melissa Miles from St. Joseph Regional Catholic School reflected on the broader impact and mission of the competition.
"Our students' participation in Elementary Science Olympiad reflects our school's mission to inspire a love of learning, foster curiosity and encourage excellence in all they do through teamwork, perseverance and faith," she said.
A highlight of the day was the build events which involved creating structures such as bridges, cars and egg drop devices designed to withstand stress tests. These challenges not only tested students' problem-solving abilities but also emphasized the importance of collaboration and creative thinking.
Sixth-grader Kate Sanders from Beulah Elementary School shared her experience.
"This is my final year participating in Elementary Science Olympiad," she said. "I really enjoy all of the events, especially the hands-on ones. It can be challenging, but I always find a way to figure things out."
The event concluded with a thrilling awards ceremony, where participants cheered on their peers as top teams and individuals were recognized for their outstanding achievements. Winners received medals and ribbons in recognition of their hard work and dedication.
Samuel, a fourth-grader from Fultondale Elementary, also shared his excitement.
"Science Olympiad was a very fun experience," he said. "It shows that working hard can lead to great achievements."
Auburn's Elementary Science Olympiad Competition continues to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators. Event organizers are excited to continue efforts to promote exposure and excitement about STEM education and looks forward to hosting more successful events that encourage young minds to explore the wonders of science.
