For Isaiah Vande Griend, it was the feeling of home that attracted him to Auburn. A senior in the School of Kinesiology, Vande Griend will be graduating in December with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a minor in psychology. He grew up as a military child, moving all over the country before his family settled in Huntsville.
“As someone who had rarely felt a true sense of home, my quick feeling of belonging within the Auburn Family was surprising,” he said.
He was chosen to be the College of Education’s student marshal for the fall 2024 commencement ceremonies.
“We congratulate Isaiah on being named the student marshal for the College of Education,” said Jeffrey Fairbrother, dean and Wayne T. Smith Distinguished Professor of Auburn's College of Education. “His excellence in the classroom, as well as his involvement across campus, make him an ideal choice to represent our college during Auburn University’s commencement.”
Vande Griend landed in the School of Kinesiology pursuing exercise science because of his passions for health and science – and his goals for the future.
“My career goal is to become a compassionate physical therapist who uses evidence-based practice to provide optimal treatment for patients,” he said. “During my time at Auburn, my involvement with various service organizations has strengthened my leadership skills and passion for helping others, both of which will be integral for my future work as a physical therapist.”
Vande Griend’s campus involvement includes Academic Support, The Campus Kitchen, Lutheran Student Fellowship, Best Buddies and the Red Cross Club. In his free time, he enjoys exercising, watching sports, playing games and participating in activities with his church.
Upon graduation, Vande Griend plans to pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy and will begin graduate school in fall 2025.
