Auburn College of Education associate professor Sean Durham is excited to offer his annual summer enrichment program once again for area preschool students.
This time, that offering will have a brand-new location: the College of Education’s new building at the corner of Samford Avenue and Duncan Drive.
“Auburn Early Childhood Education has hosted a summer enrichment program for young children for over 30 years!” said Durham, the Early Childhood Education program director. “This year, we are happy to invite preschool children into our Early Childhood Learning Laboratory in the new College of Education building.”
The program —The Technologies of Childhood: Exploring the Art and Science of Early Learning—is designed for children ages 4-6 and lasts 20 days from June 16-18, June 23-26, June 30-July 2, July 8-10, July 14-17 and July 21-23.
The program starts each morning at 8 a.m., with drop-off available at 7:45. Sessions end at noon.
“This year’s program will feature an attractive play-based classroom with daily explorations in science and the arts,” Durham said. “Children will have multiple opportunities each day to choose among carefully prepared explorations with art media, science materials, and free play with the close support of Auburn Early Childhood teacher candidates.
“Based upon the children’s degree of engagement, teachers will provide additional opportunities to deepen learning and expand into new areas of interest. Children will have daily opportunities to use and develop early literacy skills and mathematical reasoning.
The cost for the program, including all materials, is $475. Space is extremely limited, so those interested are encouraged to register as soon as possible by emailing Durham at rsd0007@auburn.edu.
Durham said the program is a great way for parents to keep their children engaged in fun activities that also provide an academic advantage during the summer.
“Summer Enrichment has been just the right answer for hundreds of families over our 30-year history,” Durham said. “This is a time where we focus on how children really learn—through play and physical engagement! Plus, our Auburn students always connect to the children in such meaningful and creative ways!”
