Auburn College of Education student Laney Roe is not only a standout in the classroom but also for her stellar work in the college’s Office of Academic and Faculty Affairs as a top student worker.

“Laney continually takes the initiative to complete work that needs doing and takes charge of other student workers to help accomplish tasks with the natural proclivity of a leader,” said David Shamp, Roe’s supervisor and Student Services Coordinator. “But more than that, she never asks others to do what she would not be willing to do herself. This is, in my opinion, the hallmark of true leadership.”

On Thursday, Roe was recognized in a big way for just that as, receiving Auburn University’s National Student Employment Award for Leadership.

“Within our office, Laney helps with recruitment events on and off campus and currently serves as the College of Education’s Student Ambassador president,” Shamp said. “She has helped to reorganize the program by implementing clear communication systems using the best of technology such as GroupMe, Qualtrics, Trumba, Linktree, and other emerging technologies.”

National Student Employment Week was organized in 1989 by the National Student Employment Association (NSEA) to recognize the invaluable contributions student workers make to our workforce. Colleges and universities across the nation have continued to celebrate National Student Employment Week each year during the second week in April.

“Not only is Laney a shining example of what a future educator will be, but she is the epitome of what it means to represent a college in grace, intelligence, and virtue as a young lady so dedicated with the selfless desire to build a better future for all."

“More than simply improving so much of the working processes of this vital organization Laney has helped—through her communication—build community,” Shamp said. “Her efforts to establish a Student Ambassador program have gone from occasional meetings with scattered names and faces into a family of close-knit, supportive students striving to represent Auburn University and our College of Education.”

Roe, a native of Hoover, Alabama, holds a perfect GPA as a junior majoring in Elementary Education. In her time in the College of Education, she has helped with guest visits to the college as well as with such events as Camp War Eagle, TALONS days, Preview Days, First Year Seminars, and so much more.

Shamp said Roe’s leadership abilities extend beyond his office, noting how Roe also serves as an EAGLES (Education to Accomplish Growth in Life Experiences for Success) program committee member for her sorority, where she acts as a liaison of support for students with intellectual disabilities. She is a WINGS peer mentor where she works directly with the College of Education’s EAGLES program, and she also volunteers as a LEAD Mentor within the Honors College to help first-year students adapt to college life.

With Auburn’s new College of Education building soon to open to students in the summer, Roe likewise has been busy working with staff members to help establish standard operating procedures for building tours involving Student Ambassadors.

“Not only is Laney a shining example of what a future educator will be, but she is the epitome of what it means to represent a college in grace, intelligence, and virtue as a young lady so dedicated with the selfless desire to build a better future for all,” Shamp said.
