For Will Brown, the newest academic advisor in Auburn’s College of Education, advising is about much more than just helping students select their classes.
“When it comes to my work, my ‘why’ is having the opportunity to create a positive impact on students’ lives and academic journeys,” Brown said.
Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, Brown also spent time growing up in Michigan before earning his undergraduate degree in psychology from Northern Michigan University. He then earned a master’s degree in academic advising from Kansas State University, a graduate certificate in intercollegiate athletic administration from the University of Mississippi, and an Ed.D. in higher education administration from the University of Southern Mississippi.
As an undergraduate student, Brown struggled to connect with his advisors, and he made a few mistakes that set him back when completing his degree requirements. He discovered the master’s program in academic advising, and he knew it was a career path he felt passionate about.
“If I could be someone who could help future students from making the same mistakes that I did, I knew that was something that I would want to do,” Brown said. “Ultimately, I knew that I wanted a career in higher education, and I realized that I could make the most impact within the world of academic advising.”
Before arriving at Auburn, Brown worked as an academic advisor and adjunct instructor at Florida SouthWestern State College in Fort Myers, Florida. As the newest member of the College of Education’s advising team, he will serve as the advisor to the early childhood education, music education, math education and science education programs.
“I’m most looking forward to working with our great team and serving our talented students,” Brown said. “I truly enjoy getting to form relationships with students and helping them achieve their academic and career goals.”
Though he is brand new to Auburn, Brown said he was drawn to the great reputation of the university and community and the Auburn Family atmosphere. He is looking forward to experiencing the Auburn food scene, but as a huge sports fan, Brown is most excited for gamedays this fall. In his free time, Brown loves playing pickleball and travels as much as he can.
While he waits for the Auburn football season to arrive, Brown is eager to hit the ground running in the College of Education.
“I hope to bring passion and professionalism when it comes to serving our students and ensuring that I maintain a student-centered approach that prioritizes their success and overall well-being,” Brown said.
