In Auburn’s College of Education, a group of 10 students serves as the voice of the college in student government. The College of Education (COE) Student Council serves as a liaison between COE students, Auburn’s Student Government Association (SGA) and the Dean’s Office.
“Involvement in Student Council provides students with an opportunity to engage more deeply within their college, build meaningful relationships with faculty and staff and connect with student leaders across other colleges on campus,” said Ivy Sharp, the council’s advisor.
The Student Council supports both college-specific and university-wide initiatives. Members host welcome-back events each semester, participate in fundraising efforts and attend regular meetings with SGA and college leadership.
In the past year, the council facilitated several events, including “Pops of Positivity” in the College Education Building, where members distributed popsicles and collected student survey data. The council partnered with the College of Architecture for a “Pack-to-School” drive to gather over 300 backpacks for Pick Elementary School, and the College of Liberal Arts to host a book reading on Samford Lawn with author Sam Hendrix.
College of Education Dean Jeffrey T. Fairbrother said he has seen positive changes come from the work of the council, such as securing a microwave for student use in the new building and collaborating with other colleges on events.
“The Student Council has played a key role in helping our students feel at home in the new building,” Fairbrother said. “The council is responsible for initiatives based directly on student feedback as well as collaborations across the university that raise the profile of the College of Education.”
Vice President Reagan Boledovic said she joined the council to make a difference for her fellow students in the College of Education, and she has loved the opportunity to collaborate with college leadership and others on campus. She also noted it was a great way for education and kinesiology majors to form connections.
“It felt like a way to turn my ideas and concerns into tangible results, whether through planning events or advocating for student needs,” Boledovic said. “I also enjoyed the chance to grow as a leader and collaborate with other people who care about making a positive impact on the College of Education.”
Nominations for Student Council are due in December, and elections take place in February. Voting occurs concurrently with Miss Auburn voting.
“Student Council is an excellent way for students to get involved,” Sharp said. “Members have the opportunity to work closely with college leadership to help advocate for and implement changes that reflect the needs and interests of the student body.”
