Auburn University’s College of Education has appointed Matthew Miller as director of the School of Kinesiology, following a comprehensive review of the school’s needs, accomplishments and long‑term direction.

College of Education Dean Jeffrey T. Fairbrother emphasized Miller’s leadership and the promise of the school’s future under his guidance.

“Dr. Miller has demonstrated exceptional commitment to the School of Kinesiology and to Auburn University,” Fairbrother said. “His scholarly accomplishments, collaborative approach and dedication to student success make him an outstanding choice to lead the school into its next chapter of growth and innovation.”

Miller has served Auburn University with distinction since 2012, holding several key leadership roles in the College of Education’s School of Kinesiology, including interim director, assistant director and Graduate Program officer. His long record of service, collaboration and academic excellence has made him a central contributor to the growth and national reputation of the school. The School of Kinesiology’s doctoral program is ranked No. 12 in the United States by the National Academy of Kinesiology.

Miller brings a strong academic foundation to the role, holding a Ph.D. in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science from the University of Maryland, an M.S. in Exercise, Fitness, and Health Promotion from George Mason University, and a B.A. in Political Science from Elizabethtown College. He expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to continue serving the School of Kinesiology in his new, expanded role.

“I am honored to step into this position and to work alongside such talented faculty, staff and students,” he said. “The School of Kinesiology has a strong foundation, and I look forward to building on that momentum as we advance our research, teaching and outreach efforts.”

A respected scholar, Miller’s research focuses on motor learning, performance and the neuroscience of sport and exercise behavior. His portfolio includes 75 peer‑reviewed publications, a co‑edited Oxford University Press handbook and numerous interdisciplinary collaborations across campus and beyond.

Miller is also known as a dedicated educator and mentor. His commitment to student development is reflected in the success of the many graduate students he has guided — students who have earned university‑level awards and secured strong academic placements. He is recognized for creating learning environments that emphasize critical thinking, motivation and an understanding of both the science of human performance and the broader factors that shape it.
