The College of Human Sciences Department of Consumer and Design Sciences is adding a Certificate in Financial Planning, becoming one of only three Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Board registered programs in the state.

Offering flexible learning options over the course of four semesters, Auburn’s Certificate in Financial Planning introduces students to the core areas of personal financial planning. Through the curriculum, students learn to analyze and advise in all personal financial planning knowledge components as identified by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards.

“This addition greatly enhances what is already a growing field of study in Philanthropy and Non-Profit Studies in Consumer and Design Sciences,” said Susan Hubbard, dean of the College of Human Sciences. “And with this Certificate of Financial Planning being open to all students at Auburn University, it provides a valuable credential to help fill a current void in the industry today.”

Courses offered through the College of Human Sciences and Harbert College of Business such as consumer financial planning, consumer tax planning, retirement and benefits planning, risk and insurance, investments and more are just a handful of the courses offered in the curriculum as 21 total credits are needed to earn the CFP.

Upon completion of the certificate, students will then be eligible to sit for the certification exam to become a certified financial planner. Once becoming a CFP, career opportunities could include becoming a financial planner/advisor, wealth manager, insurance advisor, estate planner, tax consultant, retirement planning specialist, portfolio manager, among other financial related positions.

According to the CFP Board, financial planners are in high demand and consumers are increasingly partnering with financial planners to ensure a confident financial future.
