In its ongoing mission to serve various organizations and the pursuit to continuously seek exciting collaborations through craft beer, New Realm Brewing–Auburn and the Horst Schulze School of Hospitality Management is excited to team up with the Auburn Student Veterans Association (ASVA) for a joint beer release that will positively affect both organizations.
Members of the Student Veterans Association participate in a brew day at New Realm Brewing–Auburn on March 24.
After participating in a brew day in March, the time has come for a special beer to be released the week of April 27, as “Operation Orange Peel American Wheat” will hit the taps at New Realm Brewing–Auburn in support of the ASVA.
The collaboration began after Head Brewer, Brewing Science Instructor & General Manager of New Realm Brewing–Auburn Drew Kostic reached out with a simple question — How can New Realm Brewing–Auburn and the College of Human Sciences Brewing Science and Operations program get connected with veterans at Auburn?
“He happened to ask the right person,” said John Shelby, who serves as the administration chair officer with the ASVA and helped get the connection off the ground. “The ASVA was looking for a home to host our meetings and connect with each other, and Drew was kind enough to offer the New Realm space. After our first meeting, he had suggested brewing a collaborative beer together and here we finally are.”
Shelby, along with several members of the Auburn Student Veterans Association, came to New Realm Brewing–Auburn on March 24 for the brew day where they got plenty of insight into Auburn’s unique and one-of-a-kind Brewing Science and Operations program.
“The biggest advantage of having the brew day was getting the behind-the-scenes access to this incredible brewing operation,” said Shelby. “However, having a brew day was just an amazing way to connect with each other, and grow the relationship with New Realm overall.”
Now that the beer is complete, Operation Orange Peel American Wheat will soon launch and $1 of each Operation Orange Peel draft sold during release week will directly benefit the ASVA organization.
“The beer will be a fruited American Wheat, similar to a Blue Moon, with some bitter and sweet orange peel as well as some coriander,” said Shelby. “Another thing that makes this beer special is that the hops were grown by the Horticulture Department at Auburn, so this beer has as much of Auburn as possible within it.”
“With Auburn having such a robust veteran community, New Realm is honored to participate in this collaboration and give back a mere fraction of what the great men and women of ASVA sacrificed for our country.”
“With Auburn having such a robust veteran community, New Realm is honored to participate in this collaboration and give back a mere fraction of what the great men and women of ASVA sacrificed for our country,” said Kostic. “It was a true pleasure to work with such a friendly, excitable, and honorable group and I hope to have the opportunity many times again in the future."
